Conference "Pathways to a Digital Future"

The Conference "Pathways to a Digital Future" on October 12, 2009 held in cooperation with the Industriellenvereinigung on the occasion of FTW's 10-years-celebration discussed chances and challenges for industry and academia on the way to innovation leadership. Excellence in information- and communication technologies is the motor for sustainable economic growth, representatives of ICT companies agreed on during the press conference held in the morning of October 12. "A digital future is rooted in intelligent eco-systems. They connect communications, environment, energy, mobility and health to create new markets for economy and society" said Prof. Dr. Wolrad Rommel, CEO and managing director of FTW.
Concerning the development and the worldwide construction of intelligent eco-systems Austria has a good starting position for advances in technology and research, agreed all participants of the press conference.
The conference stands for the new strategic alignment of FTW. FTW will expand its thematic focus on transportation and energy.
Economic growth through innovative communication technologies was the topic in the morning on the day of the conference. Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter, Telekom Austria Group, Mag. Georg Kapsch, Kapsch Group, and Dr. Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer, Verbund, held interesting Key Notes. Further agenda highlight was the panel discussion. In the afternoon Round Tables with respresentatives from industry and academia followed. They discussed actual trends and issues of ICT applications in communications, transportation and energy. During the breaks presenters and sponsors like Alcatel-Lucent, Telekom Austria, mobilkom austria, Kapsch and Bühler showed latest products, research projects and innovations.

Nachrichtentechnisches Kolloquium
This year's Nachrichtentechnisches Kolloquium was bridging communications and informatics in order to discuss innovative approaches of cooperative telecommunications. The colloquium was hosted at TU Wien, Gusshausstr. 25, Vienna, Austria. "Dr. Helmut Malleck, initiator of the Kolloquium, pointed out the high level of this event.

Nicolai Czink wins GIT-Preis 2009
Within the General Assembly Meeting of the OVE (Österreichischer Verband für Elektrotechnik) on May 7, 2009 Dr. Nicolai Czink was awarded the GIT-Preis for his Ph.D. thesis "The Random Cluster Model".

Incoming student group from FH St. Pölten
In cooperation with the FH St. Pölten and INSO (Research Group for Industrial Software) a student group visited FTW on May 11, 2009. Matthias Baldauf and Raimund Schatz informed the students about Mobile Application Development at FTW including the presentation of the projects WikiVienna and Point-to-Discover. A subsequent tour through the i:lab convinced the students of the FTW-projects' scientific and creative potential.

Computers speak Viennese: Project Presentation
The outcome of the project "Viennese Sociolect and Dialect Synthesis" are synthetic voices, which allow a computer to "speak" in different Viennese dialects.
On April 30, 2009 the interactive project presentation took place in the Schutzhaus Zukunft, Auf der Schmelz.

7. Girls Day 2009
On April 23, 2009 15 girls of the Fachschule für wirtschaftliche und soziale Berufe visited FTW to experience the daily life of researchers. After a tour through FTW and VRVis and the presentation of different projects the girls could plan an own Research Project. They especially appreciated the direct contact to young researchers.
On initiative of the City of Vienna in 2009 the Töchtertag took place the 7th time. Girls have the opportunity to visit a Viennese company to get insight into professional experience.

Project Start for FIT-IT project GreenDSL
The GreenDSL project team will create a novel systematic framework for joint algorithmic and hardware optimization to reduce energy consumption in Telecommunication Embedded Systems. Within the scope of this project the application for this approach will be ADSL2/2+, VDSL2 and future xDSL systems, but it can be easily applied for other Telecommunication transceiver systems as well.
